Artist's Statement |
I have always loved handling fabrics. As a child I loved to make dolls clothes out of scraps of fabric, I loved having an end product that I could handle and use.
Nothing much has changed – I still love to spend hours rummaging through fabrics, threads and beads.
I particularly like to stitch by hand but I also like to create new yarns and laces using the sewing machine, which I then distort, reshape or knot to create raised, textured surfaces.
I can’t resist including shiny fabrics, metallic threads and beads in my work. I like the finished piece to look intricate and luxurious as I am inspired by the heavily embroidered clothes, and especially the metal thread work, of the 17th and 18th Century. I am particularly interested in shoes throughout history and I like to distort their shapes to create sculptural objects which are ‘shoe-like’ but not shoes, I then embellish the inside of the sole so that they have hidden depths. They are to be admired but not worn.
I am currently studying millinery which has opened up new creative possibilities for using my skills in textiles and I am looking forward to seeing where it leads me. |
